Am I the only one…..

who is concerned about the benefit bill? I’ve worked all my life, since the age of 16, and I’m happy to support those who are unable to work for reasons beyond their control. I’m thankful that I’ve always been fit enough to work and don’t have a permanent disability that means finding work is difficult. But what about those who are on benefits but are capable of work. I’ve been told by young adults they think I’m mad working when they can ‘earn’ more being at home not working. Here comes the shocker, I don’t understand why we support this?

Surely in this day and age we should have a system that supports people who need it but manages to identify correctly (not the way it is done at the moment) those who are able to work and are merrily sitting at home on benefits. I’ve been told by relatives years ago we used to have a system of coupons that meant benefits could only be used for necessity but they were removed as they were thought to be demeaning. I understand this but there are suitable alternatives that could be used. I’m sure that if we changed the system to ensure that benefits could only be used for food and clothes and not luxury items such as alcohol, cigarettes, electrical items we’d see a change in the number of people on benefits.

What about using a bank like RBS, which we practically own anyway, to provide a debit card that is unidentifiable as a benefit card. Loaded with benefit payments each month the card would restrict what you can buy i.e. food, health products and clothes only. How many more children would turn up to school fed properly? How many addictive behaviours and their negative impacts on families, society and the NHS would reduce? Surely we know the current system doesn’t work and want to support those who need it properly, how much more money would be available if we did this?

It’s just a thought xx
